Hello everyone! Today I invite all of you to read my blog. As you see it is connected with food habits.
Nowadays a "food" has became very popular and trendy. Television is full of programs about cooking in which stars and celebrities are showing how they love it. Everybody is also aware to food influence on our health and mood. We're trying to care about our health and change bad eating habits. But in fact, even if it is obvious we can meet some public activity absolutely opposite to it. It is surprising mainly due to the fact that it concerns highly developed, west country. England is the hero of my today's topic. The fact that Englishmen love eating is so evident and known that it 's starting to be their national feature. Often England is perceived as a country of extremely fat people. A British eating habits are very specific. Their cuisine is full of overcooked vegetables, greasy meats and sausages, snacks and sandwiches. In Britain there are a lot of bars and pubs which serve meals at very good prices. Unfortunately low price usually means low quality. Supermarkets offer wide assortment of ready-made meals which just must be put to microwave oven. The amount of this kind of meals on the market shelf is just incredible. Even though their eating habits are not proper they have great chefs and plenty of cooking programs. But meals which are served in English primary schools seem to be a horror. It is incredible that in advanced society nobody cares what children eat. The usual dinner contains everything what they shouldn't eat: hamburgers, chips, sweet drinks and as a dessert high-sugar sweets or crisps. No vegetables, no fruit — only one colour on the plate. I know that it sounds as exaggeration or nonsense but in fact it is true.
One of the famous British chefs, Jamie Oliver has started the campaign to raise the quality of food in British schools and transform the way the pupils eat. In 2004, he was shocked by the food that 8 millions British school children were being fed every day of the school year, Jamie took over the kitchens at the school in Greenwich.
He has transformed the recipes, has teached the cooks and organised the educational meeting with parents and children. At school he used shocking therapy on pupils and showed them how unhealthy a food looks after digestion. Before that all of them had been preparing their own meals which contained fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, etc. It was a good idea because of the fun and enjoyment of doing it.
Firstly children didn't want to change their old food but after some time they tried pasta, baked chicken, salad, boiled carrots and other colourful meals and stopped grumble. In interview one of the children confessed that it was the first time he tasted a lettuce. Isn't it strange?
Cooperation with children was a huge success however there were also a lot of problems. At some school children had to be taught how to use a knife and fork and in another pupils preferred to go to the local shop at lunchtime. Surprisingly parents were against Jamie's idea. Many of them preffered to make some packed lunch for their children. Guess what was inside?! It really sounds like a joke but they truly put there crisps, sweets, sandwiches made of white, artificial bread and many different products which are generally inadvisable for children. Others said that if their children didn't want to eat it was better to give them anything than nothing. There was also another serious obstacle — the government. After recognition of the problem and calculation of expenses they considered the Jamie Oliver's school dinner revolution as too expensive. So Jamie transformed his recipes and menues again, changed some of the ingredients but it still occured to be unacceptable. It was impossible to prepare better food at the same price. After a long and tough fight finally he managed to persuade the government to give some extra money. Government announced that it would pour an extra million pounds into school lunches over the next three years. The success of Oliver's campaign has transformed him from a celebrity to a popular hero.
Have you got any experience connected with English food ?
Did you see similar situations in other countries?
It's hard to believe that children in such a rich country eat so poor meals at schools. However, when you look at the British, it seems to be much more likely. When I've been in UK for a first time, I was shocked that only healthy looking people I've seen were immigrants. Most of the native British weren't just fat, they seemed to have no muscles. Others weren't thin or fit - rather skinny and also making impression of having no muscles. Surely there are exceptions - but the general impression was terrible.
ReplyDeleteYes and it is hard to believe that they really don't care about it. For me the most weird was the fact that the children don't know how to use the cutlery. Does it means that they eat only hamburgers? And the second thing - they can't recognise the vegetables. It is normal that pupils don't know how asparagus looks like but what about onion:)
ReplyDeleteIn Poland also does not say a lot about healthy nutrition. Parents are busy and do not have time to talk about healthy nutrition. If your child has a free choice not to choose fruits and vegetables. To eat a healthy need extra time and effort. Many people prefer not to "lose" time, and eat quickly, and no matter what.
ReplyDeleteI think that should be in school, pay more attention to conversations about healthy living. If parents do not have time to do so may be an opportunity to demonstrate to teachers;)
According to my exchange to Ireland, I lived with 3 irish guys and one italian, I also saw other people. My observation is tahat irish was eating only fast food, like frozen pizza, or pizza on the phone, or other stuff that they could put in to the microwave, I can`t remain anyting that I could call good food :)
ReplyDeleteBut that italian guy, he was preapring pretty good meals, like pasta with fresh tomatoes, fresh cutlets and fresh vegetables...
Mateusz,
ReplyDeleteU made me hungry with after reading your last sentence. Generally I think that parents and teachers do not do much efferot to prevent this kind of situations. Directors of schools should start with food education and prevent school's bars to sell fast foods. Maybe they should do one fastfood day a week in order children will not hate them :). But we shall start with education from the beginnig.
I have to agree with asia. I got the same impression when I first visited England. From my observations I found that British people are usually overweight and out of shape. I think that this is mostly because of the food they eat everyday. During my first stay I had to live with a host family. The food they were giving me was for the most part tasteless and unattractive. My colleagues were under a similar impression. That helped me to realize why fast-food restaurants are so popular over there. I think that fast-food restaurants, microwave dinners etc. mostly contribute to how British people look. When I made a promise to myself to eat only the stuff my hostess was feeding me I actually lost around 6 kilos when I came back to Poland :)
ReplyDeleteWhen I was working in England few years ago I noticed that after some time I started to intercept some eating habits from them. It happened because it was the easiest and cheapest way to feed yourself. Besides everybody did it so I thought it was normal. I noticed the effects after return to Poland when I stepped on the scales which showed over 6 kilos more! Now I think that they aren't aware what they eat. So maybe such actions like Jamie's will bring effects but after few years.
ReplyDeleteIt is true that British food is extremely fat and filling. Brittans mostly seems to be rather ... big because of it as well BUT...
ReplyDeleteNot every brittan is fat, I hope thats quite obvious. Regardless of food some of people in UK still live healthy lives and that cook who was mentioned, Jamie, is the best example of it.
I admit they have tons of junk food around but to be honest so do we. Yes, not that much but still. Doesnt stop us from looking good does it?
Point being that although Britan seems to be haven of big people you can still live a nice and healthy life there, enjoying the quality ingredients and making amazing dishes out of them. After all, what you eat is up to you and if one one decides to eat healthyly, you will have all ingredients you may need for that while living in there.
Now as for my experience with their food, as far as I noticed they put the darn eggs on everything!
I was in one bar once and the orders I heard were as follows:
-egg on toast
-egg on saussage
-egg on mushrooms
Egg on everything! It was kind of funny. Well anyway, when I move to UK I will do my best to not get twice as big!
I've been to England once. I have to say that there was one thing that I was missing - polish bread. Eating everyday sandwiches with toasts - fail. After two months when I bite normal bread, my teeth where in so much pain!
ReplyDeleteBut I regret that I haven't eaten 'english breakfast', heard it's pretty tasty :)
