Burj Dubai is the highest ever man made structure (the previous record belonged to the Radio mast in Konstantynów) thus it has in the four main categories recognized by “The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat” (CTBUH), which juxtapose and categorizes the highest buildings. The main categories recognized by CTBUH are:
- Height to architectural top of the building
- To highest occupied floor
- To tip of spire
- to top of the roof
The entire structure contains 101 floors above ground and 5 floors underground. At 89 floor there is the internal observation room, the outdoor observation deck is located at 91 floor.
In 2004 its external observation deck was the second highest in the world, it was surpassed only by the Shanghai World Financial Center.
In 2004 the Taipei 101 owned 3 of the 4 titles of tallest buildings in the world:
- building with the highest structural point,
- to the of the roof
- the highest occupied floor.
Question to discuss:
Do you know any more tall buildings around the Word?
It's funny how people have so strong desire to break the records... Especially, when you see how fugitive these records are nowadays - they don't last for long. Of course, it always have some financial reward, can attract tourists and business and so on...
ReplyDeleteAsia, you should look at record skyscrappers thing from symbolic point of view. Usually it's just the need to show the world that a particular region is financially and operationaly capable of building such towers which always incorporates some cutting-edge engineering technologies. It's a pretty old human habit - remeber 7 wonders of ancient world?
ReplyDeleteAsia, the more money you have the more you can desire :)
ReplyDeleteBurij Dubai its amazing, I saw short movie from the top of it, its just WOW!. I heared that there is a highest building in the world, that whenever somebody beats this height they can build on it another floors to go over the new skyscraper. Do you know something about it?
Willis Tower in Chicago - 442m.
ReplyDeletePoland:
- Palace of Culture and Science - 188m
- Warsaw Trade Tower - 184m
- Rondo 1 - 159m
- InterContinental Warsaw - 154m
Under construction:
- Pentominium, Dubai - 516m
- Chicago Spire, Chicago - 610m
Supertall skyscraper projects:
- Sky City 1000, Tokyo - 1000m
- Madinat al Hareer, Subiya, Kuwait - 1001m
- X-Seed 4000 - 4000m
Skyscrapers are amazing. I do not know why build such tall buildings. I like things strange and impractical, but it is slightly too much: p.
ReplyDeleteX-Seed 4000 - 4000m! WOW
I gotta find information about this project. I wonder if you ever set any limit. Maybe one day someone proves that it is impossible to build a higher building.
I think that this strong desire to break the records is one of the most basic and primary human feature and it will never ends. I like watching some of them specially due to the amazing creativity of people. Sometimes I just can't believe that people could hit on such a "mad" idea.
ReplyDeleteRecently I'd seen a TV program about the building you have written about. Prices of the apartments absolutely shocked me. It was unbelievable amount of money! One of the staff said that most of the apartments have been ransomed a long time before end of construction. What was surprised the rooms are still empty probably because many of purchasers bought it only due to personal prestige. I think that this building is just a symbol of snobbery and materializm.
I heard that rich arabic sheikhs would do a lot to tempt foreigners to come to Dubai. That's why they do so strange things and we hear about it in media. Actually Dubai is a city with a small number of people. It would be hard to regain those money which were invested in artificial islands, most expensive hotels and tallest buildings.
ReplyDeleteThe bigger the building is the more spectacular its fall would be I can imagine. Good thing that these days they use all sorts of technologies to make sure such constructions are fairly stabile.
ReplyDeleteIts quite a deal such buildings I imagine. Not only you get to sell apartments in them for example but you get free advertisement simply because its big.
But again, trying to build something like this has to be a nightmare. From what I know its not uncommon to pump millions of dollars into creating something like that only to find out that construction cannot be finished and money are wasted.
Everybody want to go up there, up in the sky. But what for? Is it bad down here? If a small building crushes - you might get out with few wunds, but if a building like this crushes - that's your end. Also what is interesting is the technique that allows to build such constructions. Now we can build skyscrapers - who knows what we could build in next 20 years?
