Industrial robots are generally heavy rigid devices limited to manufacturing. They operate in precisely structured environments and perform single highly repetitive tasks under preprogrammed control. A robot the size of a person can easily carry a load over fifty kilograms and move it very quickly. Furthermore these robots can do that job 24 hours a day for years without failures.

But there are more place for robots. It is dangerous for humans to be in space, deeply under water or inside a volcano. Other jobs are physically inaccessible, such as exploring another planet or cleaning long pipe. Places like these good fit for robots.
Locating robots to operate in space presents some challenges for engineers. The temperatures can swing wildly depending on whether the robot is in the sun light or shade and there is no gravity. Gravity is actually more of an opportunity than a challenge. Imagine big robot with twenty independent joints. On earth it would be impossible for this robot to support its own weight. This kind of robot named 'Canadarm' flown on every space shuttle flight for the last twenty years. Robot arm has three degrees of freedom shoulder and is used as a work platform for the astronauts for shooting out satellites into space, pushing a faulty antenna into place or directing a satellite into proper orbit. Another example of space robot is 'Sojourner'. For the first time Sojourner was deployed onto red planet Mars by sonde spatiale Pathfinder in 1997. The Sojourner is a six-wheeled rover of a rocker bogie design. During its first mission, it sent 550 photographs to Earth and analyzed the chemical properties of rocks. A true robot success.

Robots can work in dangerously polluted environments, such as chemical spills and radioactive hot zones in nuclear power plants. There are robots specially designed to explore areas where extreme radiation would kill a human.
The another example is 'Mini-Andros' - robot used by bomb squads to locate and dispose of bombs. Mini-Andros looks like a small tank with movable arms , which can be extended for climbing stairs. Robot is equipped in bomb-proof boxes and detachable accessories enable to break windows, see in the dark, blasting bombs. Mini-Andros ranks as teleoperated robot, so it is controlled from a distance by a human operator.

As prices fall and robots become smarter and cheaper. Today they taking simple jobs, such as cleaning an washing in over a million houses and become the part of the world entertainment. Kids meets it as intelligent robot that can walk, talk, dance, pick up objects and even shake hands like a human. It will go asleep and snore if not given commands. Similar robots become the best selling toys.

Questions to discuss:
- What are the largest achievements in the field of the robotics in your opinion?
- Can the robot toy be danger?
- Please put some pictures or films of funny robot toys.
I believe that very advanced robot toys could be dangerous in an unexpected way. The reason is not machinery, but human nature itself. Children build their image of the word since their first days, but they can have problems with distinguishing between artificial and alive creatures. This can be connected with creating emotional relations with robots, which simply can't feel, or problems with their attitude to real animals, which can't stand as much as robots do ;-)
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid that talking about robots in terms of gadgets that are currently available on the market is a little misunderstanding.
ReplyDeleteThe real robots, so the machines that are not a simple gadgets with preprogrammed few moves or actions are unheard-of. That's because like every great invention it must pay it's due to main sponsor which is army and industry.
And things get interesting there because it's obviously mix of robotics and artificial intelligence. Maybe not the Terminator but it would be nice to have a mechanical housekeeper on whom you could really rely on.
What are the largest achievements in the field of the robotics in your opinion?
ReplyDeleteI think that the most impressive are medical robots. They are more accurate than a man. To be 100% reliable. If the robot toy is "a mistake" nothing happens.
Reliability, accuracy and usability that make medical robots are the greatest human achievement in robotics.
I like the idea of "extending human arms". It means that it is very useful when people discover such devices that help them reach things that were inaccessible before. Medical robots will let us live longer. I've heard about nano robots (extremely little) that are to be put in our blood, it's not what I like - I wouldn't feel comfortable with knowledge that dozens of little "things" move inside my body. Maybe I would change my opinion it if occurred that it can extinct my life by few years:)
ReplyDeleteLargest achievements in field of robotics? Hard to say, I imagine there are so many important areas robots can help in, that it would be very tough to come up with some sort of ranking.
ReplyDeleteFact is that robots are definitely extremely usefull things, altho ones we talk about are better described as just machines since they dont really think, but perform specified set of actions. At least in my eyes robot word associates with thinking, but thats probably wrong association.
Regardless of that robots/machines are and will be used in many many areas of industry etc and whatever can be done by performing particular set of more or less straight forward actions, they will be able to speed up.
Im saying this in response to you writing that "Best job for robot is dangerous one. "
As far as I see it, its true to a certain degree but in the end, best job is whatever job can be done and improved very much by automating it. For example car production. Bam bam, done. Thats one of places we can observes its effects.
Moving on to your next question, dangerous robot toys. Can they be dangerous? Definitely. Everything can be and robots being a complicated mechanism with many parts and edges may prove particularly threatening to children.
I suppose it very much depends on construction as well but in general I would say robots are not toys for younger children. Older ones (not too old) yes, babies, no.
And not because of fact babie would have problems with deciding wheter its real or not. As far as Im concerned you could try using that argument to a normal teddy bear too. Children with always get attached to their toys and be it robot or something else they may still treat it as a "living" friend.
